Expos Score 6 in Extra Inning to Secure Win

Smithson Strikes Out 11 Over 8 For the Win

Updated Monday May 28, 2018 by Andy Philip.

The Orioles manufactured a run in the bottom of the 7th to send the game to an extra inning, after Brody came on in relief to shut down the Expos for 4 innings.  Orioles' SS Weatherhead continued to be a tough out, with 2 singles and a double in 4 trips to the plate.

Expos pitcher Smithson went the distance, striking out 11 and only walked 1 batter all game, in the 8th with a tight strike zone on a sunny Sunday at Thompson.

The Expos' first six batters in the 8th reached base safely to blow the game open, and then they shut the door in bottom of the 8th with 3 great defensive plays: a successful pick off at 2nd, a great sliding catch by Tramble at the dugout entrance, and then Filipenko's 2 hopper from centre to 3rd to gun down the Orioles runner and end the game.

Beau Mein's notoriously slow home run trot leading off the 3rd was a little premature, as his drive hit the fence in right centre and he had to scramble in to 2nd to beat the throw, and as usual when he runs at 60% or higher, he pulled both hammys in the process.
